These games are great if you are looking for a filler in your lesson or a fun game to wrap up your lesson. They can take 10-15 minutes.

Spot Tag Materials: Cones

  • Divide the students into two teams. Team one will line up at one end of the gym. Team 2 will take a cone and place it any where in the gym. This will be their “spot”.
  • The spot team must keep one foot on their spot at all times and can not move from their spot.
  • The spot team calls out “Spot Watch!” and all of team one run through the play area trying to not get tagged by team two.
  • Once team one reaches the other side of the gym they wait for team two to call “Spot Watch!” again.
  • If a student from team one gets tagged, they must freeze balancing on one foot until someone from team one comes and untags them in the next round.
  • The goal is for team one to practice dodging and for team two to practice pivoting.
  • After a few rounds, switch roles so both teams can try each role.
  • Note: After the game have a conversation with the students about strategy and what formations the spot team could use to make it easier or harder to tag the other team.

  • The other variation of the game is when the music stops the teacher can call out wizard, giant, or elf and a students must freeze in that pose.

  • Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Provide each group with a balloon.
  • Have each group stand in a circle.
  • The goal of the game is to keep the balloon in the air for as long as possible.
  • Students can only hit the balloon by jumping and striking the ball. The strike can be underhand or overhand and must be done with an open palm.
  • Have students time themselves to see how long they can keep the balloon up per round.
  • Note: This game is intended to be a lead up to learning volleyball. If your class is ready you can exchange the balloon for a volleyball and introduce different hits. You can also use a balloon with a different striking tool such as a paddle or racket.

Protect the Golden Eggs Materials: Beanbags

  • Place 7 to 8 beanbags around the gym these are the “golden eggs”. Choose 7 to 8 students to protect the golden eggs. The other students try to grab the eggs.
  • The egg protectors stand over their egg and try to tag any student that tries to grab the egg.
  • Students can not dive to grab the egg. The protector can not push students away.
  • If a student grabs the egg, they are the new protector. Students must give the new protector time to get ready by taking 5 big steps away from the new protector.
  • Once they take 5 steps away, the new protector is now active and the round begins again.
  • Note: After the game, have a discussion with the students and talk about levels, dodging, and body control.
